The Bloomquist Jean dahlia has become one of those varieties I look forward to every season. Its shape is what first pulled me in—those whimsical petals that seem to curl into each other. The stems are long and straight, handling our Kentucky heat. This one is worth studying up close.
In my garden, Bloomquist Jean usually tops out around 5 to 6 feet tall. With a good stake and a little attention, it produces a steady stream of 5-7 inch blooms, that’s big enough to impress without overwhelming a bouquet. I’ve found it to be a reliable bloomer even during those stubborn hot spells that slow other varieties down. It’s the kind of plant that rewards you for staying on top of your staking routine and nudges you to fine‑tune your fertilizer habits as the season rolls on.
This year I decided to grow 8 Bloomquist Jeans in my raised beds giving them plenty of space to shine. Their blooms are truly some of my favorites of the season. Just think that Paul Bloomquist, the hybridizer, wasn't sure if he was going to keep this seedling but his friend and fellow dahlia hybridizer encouraged him to keep it growing. Big thanks to JEAN Heeringa from Vista dahlias.
Hope you are able to get your hands on this DR Seuss style dahlia this season or next.
